En ésta entrada os dejo algunas palabras que pueden sustiruir a las que más solemos utilizar y algunos ejemplos de cómo utilizarlas. Espero que lo encontréis útil.
1.- INTENTAR
Normalmente utilizamos "TRY". Se puede utilizar también "ATTEMPT":
- You can make an attempt to do it. (Puedes intentar hacerlo)
- I´m going to attempt to do it. (Voy a intentar hacerlo)
- He attempted a joke, but no one laughed. (Intentó hacer un chiste, pero nadie se rió)
- There´s no point even attempting an explanation. (No tiene sentido ni intentar explicarlo)
- He made no attempt to be sociable. (No hizo ningún esfuerzo por ser sociable)
- This is my second/first/last.. attempt at the exam. (Es mi segundo intento de aprobar el examen)
- He attempted on the president´s life. (Atentó contra la vida del presidente)
- Arsenal had several attempts on goal. ( El Arsenal tuvo varias ocasiones de gol)
- I´m trying my best/hardest. (Estoy poniendo lo mejor de mi)
- (try+infinitivo) I try to open the window. (Intento abrir la ventana)
- (try+ing) You should try getting up earlier. (Deberías intentar levantarte antes)
- Why don´t you give it a try? / why dont you have a try? (Por qué no lo intentas?
- It´s worth a try. (Merece la pena intentarlo)
2.-PERO
Se puede utilizar ALTHOUGH, o Though en vez de BUT.
- I´m going back to India although I don´t know exactly when. (Voy a volver a la India, pero no se exactamente cuando)
- You can sleep in the couch, it´s quite small though. (Puedes dormir en el sofa, pero es muy pequeño)
- I love all of them but this one. (Me encantan todos salvo éste).
3.- MÁS O MENOS
Podemos decir ROUGHLY (rafli), en vez de "more or less" :
- We are raughly the same age. (Somos más o menos de la misma edad)
- The meeting lasted raughly 45 minutes. (La reunión duró más o menos 45 minutos)
- Roughly speaking, it´s 5 million. (Aproximadamente son unos 5 millones)
Roughly también puede significar "de manera ruda, o descuidada":
- Raughly chop the onion. (Corta la cebolla de cualquier modo)(no hay una traducción literal, se refiere a que no hace falta que sea de un modo perfecto o igual)
- What´s going on here? He said raughly. (Qué pasa aquí? dijo toscamente)
4.- IR A
Se puede sustir going por HEAD
- I´m heading out to London. (Voy a Londres)
- I was heading out of the room when he called me back. (Estaba saliendo de la habitación, cuando me llamó para que volviera)
- I think we should head back (head home). (Creo que debiéramos volver)
- We were heading towards London when the car broke down. (Estábamos llegando a Londres cuando el coche se averió)
- We are now heading into town. (Vamos al centro ahora)
- At what time are you heading off? (A qué hora te marchas?)
5.- ASUSTAR
Solemos decir "scare", pero también se puede decir "FRIGHT"
- Sorry, I didn´t mean to give you a fright. (Perdona, no queria asustarte)
- You gave her such a fright closind the door like that. (Vaya susto que le has dado cerrando así la puerta)
- You gave me the fright of my life. (Me has dado un susto de muerte)
- He frightens the hell out of me. (Me da pánico)
- My dog took fright at the noise of the fireworks and run away. (A mi perro le dio miedo el ruido de los fuegos artificiales y se escapó)
- You look a fright in that dress. (Estás horrorosa con ese vestido)
- You scare the hell/crap/shit/life out of me.(Son coloquiales)
- He scared me out of my wits when he was driving so fast. (Me sacaba de mis casillas cuando estaba condiciendo tan rápido)
- She was scared shitless. (Presa del Pánico)
- To scare the pants off. (Cagarse por la pata abajo ;))
- That loud noise scared me stiff. (Paralizada de miedo)
- You gave us a real scare when you fainted. (Nos diste un buen susto cuando te desmayaste)
- I got/had a scare when I looked at my bank statement this morning. (Tuve un susto cuando miré mi extracto bancario ésta mañana)
- If you continue like this you will scare customers off. (Si continuas así vas a espantar (scare off) a los clientes)
