ERRORES COMUNES III

Tercera entrada de Errores comunes!

1.- OF / OFF
  • "Of" significa "de", "por". La pronunciación es el sonido de la Swcha (una especie de "o" con la boca preparada para decir una "a") y una "v" (los dientes superiores contra el labio inferior y pronuncia una b) /əv/.
  • "Off" significa "apagado" "apartado" "ausente". La pronunciación es /of/ Una "O" y pronunciando bien la "F" al final.

2.- One nil

Por ejemplo en un partido de fútbol, si el resultado ha sido Uno a Cero, se dice "One Nil".

  • Arsenal won two-nil.(Arsenal ganó dos cero.)
  • Arsenal won by two goals to nil.(Arsenal ganó por dos goles a cero.)
  • We are one nil down against one of the worst teams. (Vamos perdiendo uno a cero contra uno de los peores equipos.)

3.- Diferencias b/v - n/m 

  • En español se escribe móvil y en cambio en inglés es mobile.
  • En español se escribe gobierno y en inglés es government.
  • En español se escribe confort y en inglés es comfort.
  • Sometimes I need to step out of my comfort zone. (A veces necesito salir de mi zona de confort)
  • Some people need to be push beyond their comfort zone. (Algunas personas necesitan ser empujadas fuera de su zona de confort)

4. Clean or cleanse

Ambas palabras significan lo mismo, remover la suciedad, limpiar.

Cleanse lo utilizaríamos para una limpieza mas exhaustiva, como química, o en profundidad. O bien de forma figurativa, por ejemplo "limpiar el alma".

Clean se utiliza para una limpieza mas común o mas a menudo. O en el sentido más literal.

Algunos ejemplos:

  • soul

  • impurities
  • sin
  • chakras
Clean: (cliin)/kliːn/
  • hair
  • dishes
  • floor
  • wound
5.- Say / Tell


  • Podriamos decir que TELL se refiere mas a "contar" "comentar", y SAY es "decir". En general SAY se usa mas para mensajes cortos, y TELL para algo mas extenso.




  • Jhon says its raining.
  • Maria was telling me about the party.
    • SAY siempre va seguido de TO. En cambio TELL nunca va seguido de TO.
    • She TOLD me.
    • She SAID to me. 
    • Tell significa dar información a alguien. Va siempre seguido de un Objeto Indirecto: "us" "me" "everybody" "her" "anyone" "Maria"... Say: Se suele usar para decir lo que alguien ha dicho en general. Cuando es a alguien en concreto se suele usar TELL. 
    • The teacher says we need to study more. (Lo dice en general: SAY)
    • The teacher told me. (Me lo dice a mi: TELL)
    Tell también se puede utilizar como "he notado", o "me he percatado":

    • Can you tell the difference between these two? (Notas la diferencia entre estos dos?)
    • How does one tell the difference between dreams and reality? (Cómo nota uno la diferencia entre sueño y realidad?)
    Algunos ejemplos con SAY:
    • The hoteL does exactly what says on the tin (El hotel hace exactamente lo que promete)
    • You have a lot to say about yourself (Estás encantado de conocerte)
    • You hace nothing to say about yourself (Tienes poca autoestima)
    • It goes without saying that you´ll get paid (No hace falta que te diga que serás pagado)
    • You didn´t say boo to me about going to your mother´s (No me has dicho ni pio de lo de ir a casa de tu madre)
    • Just say your piece and go (Di lo que tengas que decir y vete)
    • Just say the word and I will go / You only have to say the word and I will help you (Solo tienes que pedirlo y voy)
    • What my mother says, goes! (Lo que dice mi madre va a misa)
    • It will be a hot summer, or at least so they say. (Va a ser un verano caluroso, o eso dicen)
    • It is said that  (Se cree que)
    Algunos ejemplos con TELL:
    • His reputation told against him when he tried to change his job. (Su reputación habló en su contra a la hora de cambiar de trabajo)
    • As kids they were so alike that I couldn´t tell them apart. (De pequeños se parecían tanto que no les distinguía) 
    • I´ll tell you what, we split the money between us. (Sabes que? dividimos el dinero entre los dos)
    • I told you so! (Te lo dije)
    • Oh yeah, tell me another.. (Si, y qué mas?) (Cuándo no te crees lo que te están contando)
    • You´re telling me! (Me lo dices o me lo cuentas)
    • The teacher told me off for swearing (La profesora me riñó por decir tacos)
    • There is no telling what the future will be (No se puede saber lo que deparará el futuro)
    • You can never tell (No se puede predecir)

    6.- IT IS


    Hay veces que olvidamos poner "IT"
    • It´s raining,  Is raining
    • It is important to, Is important to
    • Is it true that you are married? Is true that you are married?

    7.- Borrow / Lend

    Borrow es tomar prestado, y Lend es prestar.
    Can you borrow me the car?  Can you lend me the car? Can I borrow your car?
    • Martin lends his car to Peter
    • Peter borrows Martin´s car
    • May I borrow your car?
    • Of course, I´ll be happy to lend it to you
    Lend a hand: Echar una mano
    Lends itself: Se presta (This is a city that lends itself to walking arround)

    8.- Steal / Cut my hair
    • "Someone stole something from me", no se puede decir "Someone stole me" porque estarías dando a entender que lo que han robado es tu persona. En cambio si se puede decir "Someone robbed me" para decir que te han robado algo.
    • "I had my hair cut" No se dice "I cut my hair" A menos que te lo hallas cortado a ti mismo.

    9.-The key TO my house

    No se dice the key OF my house

    10.-Halloween

    En español decimos Jálogüin, pero el acento se va más hacia el final, hacia la i: larga
    Haloíiin /ˌhæl.əʊˈiːn/
