VOCABULARIO: Expresiones I

En ésta entrada os dejo algunas expresiones, dichos, refranes..., idioms, phrasal verbs, proverbs...
Con unos cuantos ejemplos!!!

1.- Una cosa lleva a la otra

One thing leads to another (Una cosa lleva a otra).
One thing led to another (Una cosa llevó a otra).

Ejemplos:

• One thing led to another and I never went to the Uni. (Una cosa llevó a la otra y nunca fui a la Universidad)
• I agreed to pick him up and one thing led to another and I ended up picking up all his friends (Acepté ir a buscarle, una cosa llevó a la otra, y acabé recogiendo a todos sus amigos).
• I only asked him to teach me english, but you know how one thing leads to another, and we ended up having dinner. (Sólo le pedí que me enseñase Inglés, pero ya sabes cómo una cosa lleva a la otra, y acabamos cenando juntos)

2.- Intenso

As the day is long 

No puede hacerse una traducción literal, lo que hace es enfatizar.

Ejemplos:

• I was happy as the day is long. (Estaba muy feliz)
• He is as married as the day is long. (Está muy casado)
• She is as honest as the day is long. (Muy honesto)

3.-Tener dudas

To have second thoughts

Tampoco se puede hacer una traducción literal. Lo que significa es tener dudas sobre algo.
Si dices "ON SECOND THOUGHT" es "PENSÁNDOLO MEJOR". "On second thought, I don´t need the umbrella". (Pensándolo mejor, no necesito el paraguas).

Ejemplos:

• The bad weather is forcing me to have second thoughts about the trip. (El mal tiempo me está haciendo dudar del viaje)
• He is having now second thoughts about us. (Tiene dudas sobre nosotros)

4.-Espera, espera un segundo

Hang on, hang on a sec (second)

5.-Nunca me voy de vacío

Empty-handed 

Ejemplos:

• I love H&M, I never leave empty-handed! (Me encanta H&M, nunca me voy con las manos vacias!)
• He wont be left empty-handed. (No se quedará con las manos vacías)

6.- Encontrarse enfermo

To feel under the weather

• I´m feeling a little bit under the weather. (Estoy un poco resfriada)
• If you are feeling under the weather, take it easy. (Si te encuentras indispuesto, tómalo con calma)

7.- Darlo por sentado

To take it for granted

Ejemplos:

• I take it for granted that you are coming (Doy por sentado que vienes)
• But we often take it for granted (Pero a veces lo damos por hecho)
• We shouldn´t take it for granted. (No deberíamos darlo por hecho)

8.-Me encargo yo de todo

I´m a one man band

Literalmente es el "hombre orquesta", se refiere a la persona o empresa que se encarga de todo, sin delegar en nadie.

Ejemplos:

• I don´t have anyone helping me, I´m a one man band. (No tengo a nadie que me ayude, me encargo yo de todo).

9.- Empezar de cero

To start from scratch

Ejemplos:

• When you arrive in a new country, you always have to start from scratch .(Cuando llegas a un nuevo país, siempre tienes que empezar de cero).
• I forgive you, we can start from scratch, as if nothing had happened. (Te perdono, podemos empezar de cero, como si no hubiese pasado nada).

10.-No es de mi estilo

It´s not my cup of tea

Ejemplos:

• Being all day at the beach: Not my cup of tea! (Estar todo el día en la playa: no me va).
• This dress it´s not my cup of tea. (Éste vestido no es mi estilo).
